The Idiot’s Guide To Tying Down Cargo In Your Truck

Driving around with unsecured cargo can be very dangerous to you as well as nearby drivers.

Here are some important tips that you should follow when tying down cargo in your truck bed.

  1. Use Tie Down Straps:  It’s very important to use tie down straps.  You’ll want the tie down straps to be long enough and strong enough to hold down the cargo in your truck bed.  Adjustable tie down straps are a great option.  Rope and bungee cords usually aren’t a great option because the cargo can sway.
  2. Find Your Anchor Points: You’ll want to identify the anchor points on your truck bed.  They typically run along the side railings of a truck bed.  They vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.  You’ll want to properly secure your tie down straps to the anchor points.
  3. Examine Your Cargo: The shape and size of your cargo will determine which anchor points to use.  For larger items, you may want to bring tie down straps completely over the top of the cargo.  It all depends on the shape and size.
  4. Take It on a Test Drive: Before hauling the cargo on a long road trip or on the highway, take your truck out on a test drive to see how it handles.  This will help to ensure that everything is properly secured.
  5. Drive Safely: Once you’re ready to go, remember to drive safely.  Keep a little extra space between you and other vehicle when driving.  Also drive a little slower if you’re hauling some heavy cargo.

Following these tips will help you secure cargo in your truck.  For more great truck tips, read the ATC Truck Covers Blog.  There, you can sign up for our quarterly newsletter, which is full of helpful information for your truck.

Signs That It’s Time To Get A New Truck

At some point you’re going to need to purchase a new truck.

Here are some signs that it might be time to start looking for a new truck.

  1. Expensive Repairs –If you’re visiting the repair shop more often than you visit your favorite drive-thru restaurant, it may be time for a new truck.   When repair costs start costing more than the value of the vehicle, that’s usually a good sign to start shopping.
  2. Truck No Longer Meets Demand – If you use your truck for work and it’s no longer meeting expectations, you’ll probably want to start shopping around.  A truck that doesn’t have the right payload or towing capacity isn’t going to cut it.
  3. Expensive Gas Prices –If you’re looking to save a little money on fuel prices, you may want to purchase a newer truck.  Ever year, truck makers are improving fuel economy standards.  This can especially help if you’re driving an older truck.  You can find more on new truck fuel economy on the U.S. Department of Energy website.
  4. Emissions Issues – If you live in an area with emissions tests, you may want to get a new truck if it’s failing every single year.  Repairs to pass the emissions test can sometimes be expensive.
  5. Family No Longer Fits – If you’ve got kids squeezing into the back of your truck, you may want to consider buying a new truck with more cab space.  There are lots of great new as well as used models that can comfortably fit a family.

These are five points to consider when thinking about buying a new truck.  Have you recently purchased a new truck?  Talk about it on our Facebook Page!
