The Best Trucks for Teen Drivers

If you’re child is turning 16, you may want to get them a pickup truck instead of a car or SUV.

A pickup has several benefits over sedans and SUVs. Here are a few.

  • Distraction-Free Driving – A regular-cab pickup can usually only fit one passenger.  This means your teen won’t be distracted with lots of passengers while driving.
  • They’re Safe – In general, trucks are safe vehicles because of their high road clearance and their weight.  Your teen will be a lot safer if they get into an accident.

If you’re considering getting a truck for your teen, follow these truck buying tips.

  • Safety First – If you’re buying used, make sure it has airbags and other safety features such as anti-lock brakes.  If the truck is over 10 years old, you may want have the airbags checked.
  • Avoid Custom Modifications – If you’re teen is just learning to drive, avoid the lift kits and off-road tires until they get some driving hours under their belt.  If they’re looking for truck accessories, consider fiberglass tonneau covers or from a tonneau cover manufacturer.
  • Think about Cab Size– As noted earlier, standard cab trucks offer distraction-free driving. Avoid getting your teen an extended cab truck.
